Welcome to the Central Avenue Bridge Replacement Project website!

The City of Newark plans to replace the Central Avenue Bridge over the NJ Transit City Subway and implement improvements to the bridge and roadway approaches to improve deficiencies and enhance safety for all modes of transportation. The bridge was built in 1908 and has structural and functional limitations that do not meet today’s design standards and transportation needs. As the bridge is a major local and regional transit connection, this replacement project has received support from NJ Transit, the City of Newark and Essex County.

In coordination with NJDOT, NJTPA and FHWA, the City of Newark completed the Local Concept Development (LCD) Study and has advanced the project to the Local Preliminary Engineering (LPE) phase as of Fall 2023. After completion of the LPE phase, the project will progress to Final Design and Construction phases, using federal funding. Each phase requires approximately 24 months to complete.

Community involvement is an important part of this bridge project, and the Project Team encourages the community and general public to participate and provide input via this website during this and future phases.
